But before we do any in-depth troubleshooting, make sure that you have tried a computer restart to avoid some random error. And if the problem remains after the computer restart, please move on to the other fixes here.

Here’s the quick guide to this post on how to fix the Discord black screen when sharing the screen problem:

  1. Update Discord
  2. Update your graphics driver
  3. Disable hardware acceleration of your browser
  4. Disable Hardware Acceleration in Discord
  5. Clear Discord cache folder
  6. Turn off Discord’s latest Capture technology
  7. Enable the Reduced Motion feature in Discord

1. Update Discord

An out-of-date version of Discord can cause you a lot of problems like the screen share not working or black screen issue. Follow the instructions below to update your Discord.

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows key and R together to launch the Run prompt. Type %localappdata% and hit Enter.
  2. In the come-up folder, look for the Discord subfolder and double-click to open it.
  3. Double-click the Update executive file to update your Discord.
  4. Re-launch Discord and see if the screen sharing works.

2. Update your graphics driver

When you’re unable to share your screen on Discord, one of the first things you should do is to update your graphics card driver, since an up-to-date graphics driver always ensures the best gaming performance and fewer bugs.

To update your display card driver, here’s what you can do (please note that the following screenshots are taken on Windows 11, but the instructions work on Windows 10 as well):

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows key and X at the same time, select Device Manager.
  2. Double-click to expand the category Display adapters. Then right-click your graphic card driver and click Update driver (the name of the device can be different on your computer).
  3. Then click Search automatically for updated driver software.
  4. Wait for Windows to find the latest driver available for you.
  5. When the driver update is done, restart your computer for the change to take effect.
  6. Then check and see if the problem is fixed.

If Windows says that it’s already found the latest driver for you, so no newer drivers are found, then you should consider updating your graphics driver in a different way with the help of Driver Techie.

Its ever-growing driver database allows you to always have access to the latest device drivers that you need. More importantly, Driver Techie simplifies the driver update process, so all it takes is just 3 clicks (for Pro users), and all your drivers are updated.

To use Driver Techie to find you the latest drivers:

  1. Download and install Driver Techie, then launch it.
  2. Click Scan Now.
  3. After the scan, select all the drivers you need to update and click Update All. Then all your drivers will be updated automatically without you having to do anything else.

Please note that Update All is available for Pro subscribers only, otherwise, you can only manually update the driver one at a time. To see how to manually update the drivers one by one, please check this post.

3. Disable hardware acceleration of your browser

Due to anti-piracy measures, you may not be able to share Netflix or Hulu on Discord. However, if you just want to invite your friends for an online show on Google Chrome, then disabling the hardware acceleration of your browser can help you share the live viewing.

Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Copy and paste chrome://settings/?search=hardware in the address bar of Google Chrome, then hit Enter.
  2. Toggle off the Use hardware acceleration when available option.
  3. Click Privacy and security from the left panel, and select Clear browsing data.
  4. Clear the selected data.
  5. Exit Google Chrome and restart your computer.

4. Disable Hardware Acceleration in Discord

Sometimes using hardware acceleration ensures better gaming performance, and sharing your screen on Discord can be smoother with it. But if you don’t have good enough hardware, this feature can make it worse. If you’re facing the screen sharing black screen issue, then we recommend you disable it.

To do so:

  1. Launch Discord and click the gear icon to open Settings.
  2. From the left panel, select Appearance. Scroll down the right section of the page until you see Hardware Acceleration. Toggle it OFF.
  3. Click OK on the pop-up prompt to save changes.
  4. Re-launch Discord to see if the problem persists.

5. Clear the Discord cache folder

Overloaded app data can also lead to this black screen issue when sharing your screen on Discord. Try cleaning Discord roaming data to sort out this situation.

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows key and R to invoke the Run prompt. Type %appdata% and hit Enter.
  2. In the come-up folder, find the Discord subfolder and delete it.
  3. Again, invoke the Run prompt and type %localappdata%, then hit Enter.
  4. In the come-up folder, find the Discord subfolder and delete it as well.
  5. Restart your computer and re-launch Discord

If this method fails to get your Discord screen-sharing worked, read on to see the next fix.

6. Turn off Discord’s latest Capture technology

According to Discord’s Twitter, their latest Capture technology can cause a lagging issue when sharing a screen, and may possibly cause this screen share black screen issue as well. So turning it off is worth a try.

To do so:

  1. Launch Discord and click the gear icon to open Settings.
  2. From the left panel, select Voice & Video. Scroll down to the right section of the page until you see the option Use our latest technology to capture your screen. Toggle it OFF.
  3. Re-launch Discord to see if the problem persists.

7. Enable the Reduced Motion feature in Discord

This Reduced Motion feature is designed to reduce animations and movements within the app, which ensures you a better and smoother user experience. Presumably, it helps us resolve the screen share black screen issue.

To enable it:

  1. Launch Discord and click the gear icon to open Settings.
  2. From the left panel, select Accessibility. Clear the Sync with computer checkbox, toggle ON the option Enable Reduced Motion.
