[Solved] Discord Mic Not Working
Does your mic stop working on Discord all of a sudden? And Discord doesn’t seem to detect a microphone on your computer, making it impossible to talk to your friends on Discord.
Annoying it may be, but don’t worry, in this article, you’ll be able to solve the Discord mic not working problem with step-by-step instructions.
Before we start some advanced troubleshooting, there are some simple fixes you can try first:
- Close Discord completely and re-launch it.
- Unplug your audio/mic jack or USB and then re-plug it back, then re-launch Discord.
- Restart your computer and then re-launch Discord to see if it works.
If the above doesn’t fix your not working Discord microphone problem, follow the steps below.
- Run Discord as admin
- Update your audio drivers
- Choose the correct mic for Discord
- Reset your voice settings
- Automatically determine input sensitivity
- Use Push to Talk mode
Please note that if you have tried one of them before, skip it and just start from the one you haven’t tried.
1. Run Discord as admin
Sometimes granting Discord elevated permissions resolves the microphone not working problem, according to some users’ feedback.
To do so:
- On your keyboard, press the Windows key and the S key together and search for Discord.
- In the returned results, right-click on the Discord icon, then select Run as administrator.
- Check if your Discord’s audio works properly
2. Update your audio drivers
When your Discord mic doesn’t work, one of the first things you should do is to update your sound card driver, since an up-to-date audio driver always ensures fewer bugs.
To update your audio card driver, here’s what you can do (please note that the following screenshots are taken on Windows 11, but the instructions work on Windows 10 as well):
- On your keyboard, press the Windows key and X at the same time, select Device Manager.
- Double-click to expand the category Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Then right-click your audio card driver and click Update driver (the name of the device can be different on your computer).
- Then click Search automatically for drivers.
- Wait for Windows to find the latest driver available for you.
- When the driver update is done, restart your computer for the change to take effect.
- Then check and see if Discord’s microphone is working again.
If Windows says that it’s already found the latest driver for you, so no newer drivers are found, then you should consider updating your audio card driver in a different way with the help of Driver Techie.

3. Choose the correct mic for Discord
Although it’s not that common, sometimes using the wrong device in Discord can stop the mic from working on Discord.
To check if this is your case:
- Click on the gear icon on the right of your avatar to enter User settings
- Select Voice & Video from the left panel, you will see Input Device underneath the header Voice Settings
- Click on the drop-down menu to select your device
- Maximum the Input Volume by pulling the slider to the right.
- Re-launch Discord to see if the microphone works.
4. Reset your voice settings
If you have changed your voice settings, which might cause your Discord microphone to stop working, then you need to reset your voice settings.
To do so:
- Click on the gear icon on the right of your avatar to enter User settings
- Select Voice & Video from the left panel, scroll down the right section until you see the Rest Voice Settings button, then click on it
- Click on Okay and re-launch your Discord to see if the Discord mic works again.
5. Automatically determine input sensitivity
If the Automatically determine input sensitivity function is disabled in Discord, your Discord can have trouble detecting input from your microphone, and thus you’ll have trouble using the microphone on Discord.
In this case, please try enabling this setting in this way:
- Click on the gear icon on the right of your avatar to enter User settings.
- Select Voice & Video from the left panel, you will see the Input Sensitivity.
- Toggle on the Automatically determine input sensitivity.
- Re-launch Discord to see if the microphone works.
6. Use Push to Talk mode
If you’re using Voice Activity as your input mode and your Discord mic doesn’t work properly, try to switch to Push to Talk mode. This mode allows Discord to pass incoming audio when you press and hold the set-up keybind.
To do so:
- Click on the gear icon on the right of your avatar to enter User settings
- Select Voice & Video from the left panel, you will see the Input Mode
- Check the box before Push to Talk to enable this mode.
- Click on the Shortcut box and press your desired Push to Talk key to set a keybind.
- Check if this helps you resolve the Discord mic not working issue.
Hopefully, your Discord microphone should work successfully after trying all these fixes. If you have any other questions, feel free to leave a comment below.
