It’s a common issue that Lenovo Fingerprint Reader stops working suddenly. When it happens to you, don’t worry, here are some troubleshooting tips for you to remedy the issue. In this troubleshooting guide, you just need to work your way down until you find the final solution.

  1. Reset your fingerprints
  2. Update the fingerprint driver
  3. Make sure Fingerprint Reader isn’t disabled in BIOS
  4. Load Default BIOS settings

Before we start troubleshooting, please restart your computer and then proceed with the troubleshooting steps below. (please note that all the screenshots below are taken on Windows 11, but the instructions work on Windows 10 as well)

1. Reset your fingerprints

If your Lenovo Fingerprint Reader is not working properly, you can first uninstall the Lenovo Fingerprint Manager and then set up the Fingerprint Reader again. Here’s what you can do:

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and search for “apps“. Then, select Add or remove programs from the returned results.
  2. Locate Lenovo Fingerprint Manager /Lenovo Fingerprint Manager Pro, then select Uninstall.
  3. Click Uninstall to confirm.
  4. Then, press the Windows logo key on your keyboard again and select Settings.
  5. From the left panel, select Accounts, and then click Sign-in options.
  6. Under Fingerprint, click the Setup button, and a setup wizard will pop up on your screen.
  7. Click Get Started, and follow the on-screen instructions to finish the setup.

Once complete, check if your Fingerprint Reader works again. If not, move on to the next solution.

2. Update the fingerprint driver

When your Lenovo fingerprint reader is not working, one of the first things you should do is to update your fingerprint driver, since the outdated fingerprint driver may be buggy.

To update your fingerprint driver, here’s what you can do:

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows key and X at the same time, select Device Manager.
  2. Double-click to expand the category Biometric devices. Then right-click your Lenovo fingerprint driver and click Update driver.
  3. Then click Search automatically for updated driver software.
  4. Wait for Windows to find the latest driver available for you.
  5. Do the same update for drivers related to Sensor or I2C under the category Human Interface Devices, Software devices, and System devices.
  6. When the driver update is done, restart your computer for the change to take effect.
  7. Then check and see if the problem is fixed.

Sometimes Windows may tell you that “the best drivers for your device are already installed”. However, it’s not always accurate since Microsoft doesn’t have access to all the newly released drivers for your devices.

Therefore, if Device Manager doesn’t find you the latest Lenovo Fingerprint driver, we recommend using Driver Techie to scan and repair outdated, corrupt, or missing drivers. It works in most cases where you have a driver-related issue. 3. Make sure Fingerprint Reader isn’t disabled in BIOS

In some cases, you may not see your fingerprint scanner under Device Manager, as the Fingerprint Reader is disabled in BIOS, resulting in the Lenovo Fingerprint Reader not working issue. To resolve this, you’ll have to navigate to the UEFI Firmware settings and check if Fingerprint is enabled.

To do so:

  1. Click the Start button, and choose Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Recovery.
  2. Click Restart now in the Advanced startup option.
  3. When your PC restarts to the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware settings.
  4. Click Restart to change UEFI Firmware settings.
  5. Select the Security section, and then check that Fingerprint is enabled.

Once done, restart your computer and check if your Lenovo Fingerprint Reader works properly. If not, continue with the next tip.

4. Reset Default BIOS settings

Either way, you can try loading the default BIOS settings if your Lenovo Fingerprint Reader stops working. To do this:

  5. Select the EXIT tab, then press Load Default Settings, and click Save & Exit changes.
  6. Restart your computer.

Conclusion

If your Lenovo Fingerprint Reader doesn’t function properly, you can first uninstall the Lenovo Fingerprint Manager and then set up the Fingerprint Reader again. Also, try to update drivers related to your fingerprint scanner. If nothing works, please check that fingerprint is enabled in BIOS or just reset BIOS settings to default.
