If you connect an HDMI monitor or TV to your computer, but there is no sound coming out from the monitor or TV, don’t worry, it’s not uncommon that this problem occurs.

And here are some of the most common fixes to solve the HDMI monitor no sound issue. Let’s read on and get this problem fixed.

  1. Select the correct HDMI port
  2. Run the Windows Sound troubleshooter
  3. Update your audio driver
  4. Select HDMI sound output as the default audio device
  5. Perform a power reset

1. Select the correct HDMI port

If you’re using an HDTV that has more than one HDMI port, you have to make sure you select the correct HDMI port that connects your TV to your computer. You can use your TV remote to check that for you.

Please note that HDMI cables do support audio signals transmission, but not all HDMI-enabled video cards support audio.

If your HDTV has an audio input, you might need to connect a separate audio cable from your computer’s sound card directly to the TV. Otherwise, you’ll need to connect the audio signal to a different output device, such as external computer speakers or your home stereo system.

2. Run the Windows Sound troubleshooter

This is another basic method to troubleshoot the HDMI no sound issue. Here’s how:

  1. In the Search box on the taskbar, type audio troubleshooter, select Find and fix problems with playing sound from the results.
  2. Select Next. Then choose the device you want to troubleshoot and then continue through the troubleshooter.

If running the troubleshooter doesn’t help you resolve the issue, continue to the next tip.

3. Update your audio driver

When HDMI has no sound, one of the first things you should do is to update your audio driver, since an up-to-date audio driver always ensures fewer bugs.

To update your audio driver, here’s what you can do (please note that the following screenshots are taken on Windows 11, but the instructions work on Windows 10 as well):

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows key and X at the same time, and select Device Manager.
  2. Double-click to expand the category Sound, video and game controllers. Then right-click your audio driver (for example, AMD High Definition Audio Device) and click Update driver (the name of the device can be different on your computer).
  3. Then click Search automatically for updated driver software.
  4. Wait for Windows to find the latest driver available for you.
  5. When the driver update is done, restart your computer for the change to take effect.
  6. Then check and see if the problem is fixed.

If Windows says that it’s already found the latest driver for you, so no newer drivers are found, then you should consider updating your audio driver in a different way with the help of Driver Techie.

Its ever-growing driver database allows you to always have access to the latest device drivers that you need. More importantly, Driver Techie simplifies the driver update process, so all it takes is just 3 clicks (for Pro users), and all your drivers are updated.

To use Driver Techie to find you the latest drivers:

4. Set HDMI sound output as the default audio device

By default, Windows doesn’t transmit sound over the HDMI output. Please follow the instructions below to set HDMI sound output as the default audio device.

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type control panel, then select it from the results.
  2. Select Hardware and Sound from the Control Panel, and then select Sound.
  3. On the Playback tab, right-click on the blank space and select Show disabled devices and Show disconnected devices.
  4. If you see the output device connected with the HDMI cable and if it’s grayed out, right-click on it, select Enable. Then click the Set Default button, and then click Apply and OK.

If this method doesn’t resolve the HDMI monitor no sound issue, please continue to the next tip.

5. Perform a power reset

A power reset erases all information in the computer memory, which might resolve HDMI display and sound issues.

Before you perform a hard reset, you have to disconnect all peripheral devices, such as external speakers, or HDTV. After going through the steps below, you can reconnect the peripheral devices one at a time.

For desktop computers:

  1. Turn off the computer. Disconnect any peripheral devices, and then unplug the power cord.
  2. With the power cord unplugged, press and hold the Power button for approximately 15 seconds.
  3. After you drain the capacitors, plug in the power cord but leave the peripheral devices disconnected.
  4. Turn on the computer.

For laptops with a removable battery:

  1. Turn off the computer, and then unplug the power cord. Disconnect any peripheral devices, and then remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station.
  2. Remove the battery from the computer.
  3. With the battery and power cord unplugged, press and hold the Power button for approximately 15 seconds.
  4. After you drain the capacitors, re-insert the battery, and then plug in the power cord but leave the peripheral devices disconnected.
  5. Turn on the computer.

For laptops with a non-removable battery:

  1. Turn off the computer, and then unplug the power cord. Disconnect any peripheral devices, and then remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station.
  2. With the power cord unplugged, press and hold the Power button for approximately 15 seconds.
  3. After you drain the capacitors, plug in the power cord but leave the peripheral devices disconnected.
  4. Turn on the computer.

Hopefully, one of the methods above may bring back sound to your HDMI monitor. If you have any questions, please feel free to comment below.
