If your Nvidia graphics card is gone from Device Manager under the category Display adapters, don’t worry. Luckily, there are still some fixes to make your NVIDIA display card show up again in Device Manager:

  1. Uninstall the unknown device drivers
  2. Turn off the iGPU mode
  3. Check that the discrete GPU is enabled in BIOS
  4. Update your BIOS

Before we start troubleshooting, please restart your computer first to flush the buffer and repair any possible random bugs. After that, let’s take a look at the steps below.

1. Uninstall the unknown device driver

If your Nvidia graphics card is not showing in Device Manager, it’s mainly because your operating system fails to recognize the display card adapters. However, it may be listed under the category of Other devices as an unknown device or a video controller with a yellow exclamation.

In this case, we’ll have to uninstall all the unknown devices first and let Windows install the latest Nvidia graphics driver for you.

Here are the procedures:

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows key and X at the same time, select Device Manager.
  2. Click the View menu and choose Show hidden devices.
  3. Double-click to expand the category Other devices. Then right-click the unknown device driver and click Uninstall (the name of the device can be different on your computer).
  4. Restart your computer for your system to automatically install the Nvidia graphics driver for you. Then check and see if the problem is fixed.

2. Turn off the iGPU mode

If you’re using an ASUS laptop, you can try disabling the iGPU mode to get your Nvidia graphics card back in Device Manager. According to many ASUS laptop users, this method successfully resolves the issue.

Follow the instructions below:

  1. Unplug your second monitor if you have one.
  2. Go to Armory Crate, and turn the iGPU mode ON. Restart your computer.
  3. Go to Armory Crate again and turn the iGPU mode OFF. Restart your computer.
  4. On your keyboard, press the Windows key and X together and select Device Manager.
  5. Double-click to expand the category Display adapters. If you see your Nvidia graphics card driver is showing here, then you’re lucky that the problem is resolved.
  6. If nothing new shows up, click View from the top menu bar and select Show hidden devices. Right-click the category Display adapters and select Scan for hardware changes.
  7. If the showing-up driver is Basic Microsoft Display Adapter, right-click on the driver and select Update Driver.
  8. Click Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.

  9. Check if the NVIDIA driver is shown under the Model list. If it is, click it and select Next. Once the driver is installed, restart your computer and the problem should be fixed.
  10. If you don’t see the NVIDIA driver under Model, you need to download the Nvidia graphics driver from Nvidia’s official website or your computer manufacturer’s website. Once downloaded, go back to the Model list and click the Have Disk… button and then click Browse to select the driver setup file you’ve just downloaded. Click OK to complete the installation.
  11. Once installed, restart your computer.

If you’re not an ASUS user and don’t see the Armory Crate, skip this step to the next fix.

3. Check that the discrete GPU is enabled in BIOS

If you have both integrated and discrete display cards, you might have to enable the discrete GPU in BIOS, as your operating system might fail to recognize it.

However, the way to access the BIOS settings differs massively among different manufacturers, as changing BIOS settings incorrectly can cause damage to your computer.

If you are an advanced computer user, you may already know how to enter BIOS and enable your discrete GPU. If you don’t know how to enter BIOS, please seek help from your PC manufacturer support or a technician who you could ask for assistance.

4. Update BIOS

Updating BIOS can allow your motherboard to work with new hardware. If your BIOS is out-of-date, you can face issues like the Nvidia graphics card not showing in Device Manager.

To update your BIOS, you’ll have to download the latest version of BIOS from your motherboard or your computer manufacturer’s website. Again, the way to access the BIOS settings differs massively among different manufacturers, as changing BIOS settings incorrectly can cause damage to your computer. If you don’t know how to enter BIOS, please seek help from your PC manufacturer support or a technician who you could ask for assistance.
