How to Back up and Restore the Registry in Windows 11, Windows 10
Before you make some changes to the Registry, it’s best to do the backup first. You have to take it seriously and carefully because there’s no going back if your system goes wrong after making those changes without any backup.
Please follow the instructions below to have it work correctly:
For Backup
For Restoration
1. Back up the registry file manually
Let’s take the game Diablo II: Resurrected, for example. It’s recommended to back up the registry information before you delete it for a clean uninstallation.
- On your keyboard, press the Windows key and the R key together to launch the Run box. Type Regedit and hit Enter.
- In Registry Editor, navigate to the following locations from the left tree:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Blizzard Entertainment\
- In each location, right-click on the Diablo II subkey/folder and select Export.
- In the Export Registry File dialog box, select the location to which you want to save the backup copy, and then type a name for the backup file in the File name field.
- Click Save.
2. Create a restore point
- On your keyboard, press the Windows key to open the Start menu, type create a restore point in the text field. Select Create a restore point from the search results.
- If your system protection is disabled, please select a drive and turn the protection on by clicking on the Configure button. then hit OK.
- Then select Create and follow the on-screen instructions to create a restore point.
Hopefully, your registry file will save to your PC for emergency needs. And if anything wrong really happens to your PC after you delete the file, restore the registry you’ve backed up previously. Here are two ways to do so:
1. Restore a manual backup
Again, let’s take Diablo II: Resurrected for example.
- On your keyboard, press the Windows key and the R key together to launch the Run box. Type Regedit and hit Enter.
- In Registry Editor, navigate to the following locations from the left tree:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Blizzard Entertainment\
- In each location, right-click on the Diablo II subkey/folder and select Import.
- In the Import Registry File dialog box, select the location to which you saved the backup copy, select the backup file, and then click Open.
2. Restore from a restore point
- On your keyboard, press the Windows key to open the Start menu, type create a restore point in the text field. Select Create a restore point from the search results.
- Select System Restore and follow the on-screen instructions to finish.
Now, your computer should be set to a previous point in which no registry information is deleted. If you have any questions or feedback, please leave a comment below.
